Tanzania: Airtel and government sign agreement to develop digital education

Airtel Tanzania and the Tanzanian government will collaborate to improve digital education and access to digital content in nearly 3,000 public schools. The two parties signed a five-year memorandum of understanding to this effect on Saturday, March 23.
“ Thanks to this project, we plan to modernize certain schools to make them SmartClasses. The modern classroom will be equipped with a large smart TV and routers supplied by Airtel Tanzania. These routers will provide access to high-speed internet, which teachers can use to view content on the Smart TV and continue teaching students ,” explained Dinesh Balsingh, Managing Director of Airtel Tanzania.
This program fits with the “Our community” pillar of the Airtel Africa group’s sustainable development strategy unveiled in October 2021 and which prioritizes access to education. In November 2021, the company signed an agreement with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) to collaborate on a digital education project in thirteen African countries, including Tanzania. The African branch of the Indian telecoms group Bharti Airtel has committed to investing $57 million in this initiative .
Dinesh Balsingh believes that digital education should help overcome some of the barriers that prevent Tanzanian children from accessing education. These barriers include inaccessibility of schools, financial difficulties, quality of learning and dissatisfaction with the level of education received.
