Congo: government deploys high-speed connectivity in public universities

The Congolese government is launching a project this Wednesday, April 17, to provide high-speed Internet connectivity in the public universities Marien Ngouabi and Denis Sassou N’Guesso. Wi-Fi access points will be installed on the campuses of these establishments to allow students, teachers and administration to connect for free.
The program was unveiled in September 2023. It is component 2 of the Digital Transformation Acceleration Project (PATN) which aims to increase underserved populations’ access to high-speed Internet and improve capacity of government to provide adapted public services using digital technology. It is supported by the World Bank which finances it to the tune of $100 million.
Furthermore, the Congolese government has set itself the objective of promoting equitable access to digital services for all citizens by 2025 in accordance with the national digital transformation strategy “Congo Digital 2025” launched in August 2019. President Denis Sassou N’Guesso aims to “connect the country to reliable infrastructure for new information and communication technologies ” in order to support its socio-economic development.
Providing free Internet in public universities will help develop e-learning by facilitating access to information and educational resources online. This should also encourage collaboration and knowledge exchange, strengthen students’ digital skills, stimulate innovation and creativity.
