Madagascar: in 3 years, the number of mobile Internet subscribers has increased by 68.9%

The Communication Technologies Regulatory Authority (ARTEC) has identified 4.9 million subscribers to mobile Internet services in Madagascar in 2022. This represents an increase of 68.9% compared to the 2.9 million users that it had recorded in the country in 2019. The penetration rate which then stood at 11.5% increased to 17% in 2022.
ARTEC did not clarify whether the number of Internet subscribers referred to people using mobile Internet or to SIM cards with Internet access. However, the regulator draws an analogy between the increase in active SIM cards and the number of mobile Internet subscribers. The number of SIM cards connected to mobile operator networks increased from 11.7 million to 19.7 million between 2019 and 2022.
Over the period, mobile Internet consumption also increased in a context marked by the emergence of new modes of digital consumption. Between 2019 and 2022, mobile Internet traffic increased from 32,674 terabytes to 127,684 terabytes. This explosion in consumption can be attributed to a drop in the cost of mobile Internet. The average rate for daily deals increased from 20 ariarys ($0.0045) per MB to 5.56 ariarys/MB.
The Internet penetration rate in Madagascar has continued to grow over the last ten years, going from less than 2% in 2012 to 17% in 2022. This figure, however, remains below the average in Africa which was 40%. in 2022 according to data from the International Telecommunications Union (ITU). Initiatives are therefore needed to generalize access to mobile Internet throughout the country in a context of digital transformation.
