Algeria: the number of Internet subscribers increased by 26.1% in three years

Algeria had 53.6 million subscribers to Internet services (fixed and mobile) in 2023, according to the observatory of the Postal and Electronic Communications Regulatory Authority (ARPCE). This is an increase of 26.1% compared to the 42.5 million subscribers that the telecoms regulator recorded in 2020.

ARPCE did not specify whether the number of mobile Internet subscribers referred to people using mobile Internet or to SIM cards with Internet access. Between 2019 and 2023, the number of mobile subscribers increased from 45.5 million to 51.5 million. The number of fixed telephone subscribers increased from 4.78 million to 6.3 million.

In an intervention on Monday, May 13 on a local radio station, Karim Bibi Triki, Minister of Post and Telecommunications, attributed this growth to the implementation of the commitments of the President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, as well as to the achievement of the intermediate objectives of the sector action plan. He notably mentioned the efforts made to improve the quality of the service provided thanks to the increase in throughput.

These initiatives are part of the Algerian government’s ambitions to develop the “information society” through infrastructure, means of telecommunications and the use of information and communication technologies (ICT). The executive has also made improving the quality of connectivity and the generalization of access to high and very high speed Internet one of the priorities of its general policy.
