Ghana: ATC cuts power to some Telecel telecom sites

Telecom infrastructure provider ATC Ghana has cut off power supply to some Telecel tower sites across the country, according to a statement released to local media on Thursday, July 4. The telecom operator is accused of failing to meet agreed obligations.

“ The failure to comply with agreed obligations is such that ATC Ghana no longer has the capacity to purchase electricity and diesel to maintain Telecel’s equipment, especially when its agreements with Telecel have expired ,” ATC Ghana said.

According to ATC, the decision was taken following extensive negotiations with Telecel and notification to the National Communications Authority (NCA). In 2022, the telecoms infrastructure provider had already taken a similar decision against internet service providers Busy Ghana and Surfline. The latter eventually ceased operations.

This decision could affect thousands of Telecel customers in a context where the telecom operator (ex-Vodafone Ghana), under its new colors, has begun to better reposition itself on the market after several years of difficulties. According to the latest official statistics, the company has 6.3 million subscribers for a market share of 19.44%. Its competitors MTN and AT hold 71.73% and 8.83% respectively.
