Mali: Telecom operators invested $193.7 million in 2022

Malian telecom operators invested 116.7 billion CFA francs ($193.7 million) in their activities in 2022, according to data from the Malian Authority for the Regulation of Telecommunications, ICT and Posts (AMRTP). This represents a growth of 24% compared to the 94.1 billion CFA francs of investment reported in 2021.

According to AMRTP, the volume dedicated specifically to network infrastructure is estimated at 106.4 billion FCFA, or 91% of the total amount invested. Of this amount, 61.6 billion FCFA was devoted to the mobile network, 25.6 billion FCFA to the fixed network and 19.3 billion FCFA to the Internet. On the operators’ side, Orange comes first with 69.9 billion FCFA invested, followed by Sotelma/Moov Africa Malitel (46.4 billion FCFA) and Telecel (309 million FCFA).

This growth in investments comes in a context of accelerated digital transformation marked by an ever-increasing demand for connectivity. Telecom operators therefore need to invest in the expansion and modernization of their networks in order to reach more people and adequately meet existing demand. Between 2018 and 2022, Orange, Sotelma and Telecel invested a total of 508.3 billion FCFA in their activities.

These various investments have notably contributed to improving access to telecom services in Mali. At the end of 2022, the country had 25.8 million mobile phone subscribers, 306,900 fixed-line subscribers and 13.2 million Internet users. The penetration rate stands at 119% for telephony (mobile and fixed) and 60% for the Internet. In addition, the sector’s overall turnover reached 586 billion FCFA at the end of 2022, an increase of 5% year-on-year.
