Mauritius: Towards the development of a national AI strategy

Earlier this year, the Republic of Mauritius launched its national digital transformation strategy. It is addressing the fifth pillar of this plan, which relates to artificial intelligence.
The Republic of Mauritius officially launched the development of its National Artificial Intelligence Strategy on Thursday, July 31. A first consultation meeting bringing together government, businesses, academia, and civil society took place under the leadership of the Minister of Information Technology, Communication, and Innovation, Avinash Ramtohul.
“ At the heart of any digital transformation lies a moral responsibility: to ensure that progress does not come at the expense of people’s rights, dignity and security. […] This collaborative approach, as defined in our Plan, will enable Mauritius to develop an inclusive strategy, beneficial to every citizen, every sector and every region of our island, ” he said.
This initiative is part of the ” Digital Transformation Blueprint 2025–2029 ,” the government’s roadmap to accelerate economic growth, modernize public services, and improve citizen well-being. According to Oxford Insights, the country was among the top performers in Africa in the 2024 AI Readiness Index. It scored 53.94 out of 100, ahead of South Africa (52.91) and Rwanda (51.25), for a regional average of 32.70. However, it ranked 69th globally .
Related issues such as data governance, local talent development, AI system interoperability, and ethics were addressed. Thematic working groups were created under the coordination of Kevin Ramkaloan, Director General of Business Mauritius.
