Cross-border interoperability key to Africa’s digital future – Ghana’s Telecom Chamber CEO

The Ghana Chamber of Telecommunications and the Digital Chamber of Ghana are calling for cross-border interoperability to be prioritised as the next big step in the country’s digital transformation drive.
The Chamber believes that while Ghana has made significant progress in digital payments and mobile money interoperability, regional connectivity remains the missing link in achieving seamless trade and financial inclusion across Africa.
Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Chamber of Telecommunications and the Digital Chamber of Ghana, Sylvia Owusu-Ankomah, told Citi Business News on the sidelines of a business forum in Accra that Ghana’s success in building a strong digital financial ecosystem must now evolve to support cross-border transactions.
“Comparing Ghana to other African countries, we have a unique opportunity where we have advanced quite significantly within our mobile money and financial services space,” she said. “But that also brings a lot of challenges around how we ensure credibility to our customers so there’s trust when they transact on these platforms.”
Mrs. Owusu-Ankomah explained that the next phase of Ghana’s digital journey should focus on achieving interoperability that extends beyond national borders to connect African economies and strengthen intra-African trade.
“Ghana also has a unique opportunity because of the level of interoperability we have achieved. We should be maturing to get to a point where we are having cross-border interoperability becoming a priority for us as a country,” she added.
She further noted that the Chamber, together with its members, is actively engaging policymakers and regulators to shape the policy landscape and ensure the right frameworks are in place.
“As members of the Digital Chamber of Ghana, we are working collaboratively to ensure that we are shaping the policy landscape, and the conversations have already been going on,” she said.
