Zambia wants to connect 751 health centers to the internet

Zambia is continuing its strategy of digital transformation of the public administration. The government has partnered with technical and financial partners for this purpose.
The Zambian authorities, through Smart Zambia Institute, e-government division, recently signed an agreement with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to provide internet to 751 health facilities across the country.
The initiative is part of the Smart Health Systems (SHS) project, which aims to modernize the digital infrastructure of the health sector.
The project aims to provide medical facilities, including those in rural areas, with stable and secure internet access. This connectivity will enable healthcare facilities to exchange data, use telemedicine, track electronic medical records, and facilitate the coordination of public health services.
Smart Zambia Institute will oversee the technical implementation, while UNDP will provide logistical and financial support.
This initiative aims to strengthen the resilience of the health system and accelerate the digitalization of the public sector. It should also enable better collection of health data, essential for managing epidemics and planning public policies. In the medium term, connecting these 751 health centers is part of the national “Smart Zambia” strategy, which aims to leverage digital technology for inclusive development.
