November 11th 2025
TNM is the first mobile phone operator in Malawi, which launched its services in 1995. Today, it is mainly in competition with Airtel, the market leader in terms of number of subscribers.
Malawian telecommunications company Telekom Networks Malawi (TNM) unveiled several initiatives last week aimed at strengthening its network and improving the quality of its services. These announcements were made during the ceremony marking the operator’s 30th anniversary, which claims to have already invested over 1 trillion Malawian kwacha (approximately US$577.5 million) in developing its network, infrastructure, and technologies.
According to Michel Hebert, TNM’s CEO, the company intends to continue its investments to bring technology closer to the people. He indicated that the network currently covers approximately 85% of the population, and that the priority is now to reach the remaining 15%, primarily located in rural areas.
The CEO also emphasized the company’s commitment to using more cost-effective and sustainable technologies, including solar-powered solutions, to expand connectivity while reducing operating costs. Furthermore, TNM plans to modernize its Mpamba digital financial services platform to offer more innovative and accessible solutions to a wider range of customers.
Mr. Hebert also emphasized the deployment of 5G, VoLTE technology, and Fixed Wireless Access. “We are establishing innovation hubs and artificial intelligence labs to enable Malawians to create AI-based services tailored to our needs ,” he added.
At the end of the first half of 2025, TNM indicated that its pricing, distribution, and network optimization measures were expected to yield more favorable results this year. The group intends to continue developing and implementing initiatives designed to drive customer growth, increase revenue, improve cost efficiency, and strengthen its overall financial performance. During the first half of the year, the company invested 13.15 billion kwacha in distribution systems, network improvements, and license upgrades to meet the expansion, improvement, and growth needs of its business.
As a reminder, TNM had approximately 5 million subscribers at the end of December 2024, with revenues of 158.17 billion kwachas and a net profit of 10.05 billion kwachas. Its main competitor, Airtel Malawi, reported 8.1 million subscribers, revenues of 270.96 billion kwachas, and a net profit of 42.72 billion kwachas for the same period.
