
With the Univ Connect project, Guinea is linking its universities via fiber optics.

Giving Guinean youth the means to become a skilled workforce recognized internationally is among the ambitions of the Simandou 2040 program. Several strong measures are planned for this purpose, with the support of digital technologies.
Under the leadership of the Minister of Posts, Telecommunications and Digital Economy, Rose Pola Pricemou, Guinea officially launched “Univ Connect” at the end of December 2025. This fiber optic interconnection project for higher education institutions (HEIs), led by the National Agency for Universal Telecommunications and Digital Service (ANSUTEN), aims to equip the country’s campuses with a faster, more stable and more secure internet infrastructure.
This initiative is a decisive step in supporting the digital evolution of the education sector in Guinea, and will allow our institutions to offer academic services that meet international standards ,” said ANSUTEN.
Operationally, 13 sites are already connected to the national fiber network, according to information released at the launch. Nine are fully operational, and four are in the process of being commissioned. Four additional sites are also slated for deployment. Ultimately, the program aims to connect and interconnect 17 higher education institutions, creating a secure, high-speed university network across the country.
According to ANSUTEN, this project is part of the digital transformation dynamic driven by the government within the framework of the Simandou 2040 sustainable socio-economic program. It aims to strengthen access to a modern and reliable digital infrastructure for private universities and higher education institutions across Guinea.
Beyond internet access, the goal is to create a true ” academic network ” enabling institutions to share resources and modernize their services. Univ Connect aims to facilitate access to digital libraries, online learning platforms, and research tools, while improving the quality of exchanges between nearly 80,000 teachers, researchers, and students.
Interconnection paves the way for more intensive uses: videoconferencing, hybrid courses, inter-university collaboration, access to scientific databases, and hosting of educational applications. In the medium term, this foundation could support national research and innovation platforms.
The challenge of sustainability remains. The long-term impact of this university network will depend on equipment maintenance, the robustness of internal campus networks, energy availability, and the implementation of cybersecurity standards. In other words, fiber optics is only the foundation: achieving the targeted international standards will also require sustainable governance.
