The 8 fastest African countries for mobile internet in 2025

The ranking lists only eight African countries in the world’s top mobile internet, the others not yet reaching the required testing or speed thresholds, due to less extensive networks or insufficient data.
The Speedtest Global Index ranks Morocco, South Africa and Tunisia as the African countries with the fastest mobile internet in 2025, according to data published in February 2026 by Ookla, an American company specializing in the analysis of internet network performance worldwide.
The index measures the performance of mobile networks based on millions of tests conducted by real users. It assesses download speeds, latency, and connection stability to establish a comparative ranking between countries. Average speed is expressed in megabits per second (Mbps), a key indicator for assessing the level of digital maturity of economies.
Across Africa, observed performance reflects contrasting levels of investment in telecommunications infrastructure, particularly in next-generation mobile networks and data transport capacity. The quality of connectivity is increasingly becoming a structural determinant of economic competitiveness, the development of digital services, and the attractiveness of technology investments.
Morocco is far ahead in Africa
Morocco tops the African rankings with an average speed of 124.32 Mbps (39th globally), placing it among the world’s best-performing markets. This progress is driven by the accelerated deployment of next-generation networks, particularly 5G, and the ongoing modernization of mobile infrastructure.
South Africa ranks second with 65.70 Mbps (64th globally), confirming its status as a major digital hub in Africa. The country benefits from a relatively mature telecom ecosystem, driven by significant investments from major operators. Tunisia completes the top three with 57.30 Mbps (72nd globally), a result of sustained efforts by its national operators to modernize mobile networks and deploy 5G across the country. Several operators, including Orange Tunisia, Ooredoo, and Tunisie Télécom, have launched 5G services, and structural investments, including international financing projects for expanding network coverage and capacity, support this progress.
Behind this leading trio, several African economies show intermediate performance, reflecting a gradual progression of digital transformation, but also persistent disparities between regions.
The Gulf countries dominate the world rankings
Globally, the hierarchy is dominated by the Gulf economies, which have invested heavily in digital infrastructure. The United Arab Emirates holds first place globally with 686.12 Mbps, ahead of Qatar (593.34 Mbps), Kuwait, and Bahrain. This dominance reflects early 5G deployments, high spectrum availability, and modern networks.
