Uganda Launches First National Internet Exchange to Boost Digital Sovereignty

Uganda has taken a major step toward advancing its digital infrastructure with the launch of the National IP Peering Exchange (NIPX), the country’s first open Internet Exchange Point.
The platform was officially inaugurated by Minister of State for National Guidance, Godfrey Kabbyanga, at the Uganda Media Centre. NIPX enables Internet Service Providers, content platforms, and network operators to exchange traffic locally, reducing reliance on international routing.
Until now, a significant share of Uganda’s internet traffic has been routed outside of the country before returning, resulting in higher costs, increased latency, and reduced efficiency. The introduction of NIPX is set to address these challenges by improving speed, reliability, and overall service quality.
According to government officials, the initiative will reinforce Uganda’s digital sovereignty while enhancing user experiences across key sectors, including video communications, e-government services, digital commerce, and online education.
During the launch, Kabbyanga urged ISPs, technology firms, and innovators to collaborate in building a faster, more secure, and resilient internet ecosystem.
Beyond its technical impact, NIPX is expected to strengthen Uganda’s position as a regional ICT hub, unlocking new opportunities for innovation, investment, and youth employment as the country accelerates its digital transformation journey.
