
Nigeria Expands Digital Education Push With Katsina Smart School Launch

Nigeria is advancing its digital education infrastructure following the commissioning of the Radda Model Smart Secondary School in Katsina State on May 5, 2026, as part of efforts to integrate technology into public learning systems.
The facility was inaugurated by the Chairman of the Nigerian Governors’ Forum and Governor of Kwara State, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, alongside Katsina State Governor Dikko Umaru Radda and Minister of Education Maruf Tunji Alausa. The school is one of three smart schools developed by the Katsina State Government and is equipped with digital tools designed to support technology-driven education, targeting academically gifted students, particularly from underserved communities.
The commissioning takes place within a broader national education reform framework focused on digitalization and skills development. According to the Federal Ministry of Education, more than ₦106 billion ($77.87 million) in Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) matching grants have been accessed by states, supporting the renovation of over 10,000 classrooms, teacher training programmes, and the distribution of textbooks nationwide. The ministry also reports that over 160,000 youths are currently undergoing training across more than 1,200 Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) centres, with over one million applications recorded.
Additional digital initiatives include the rollout of systems such as the Learner Identification Number and a cloud-based Annual School Census aimed at improving data-driven planning in the education sector.
However, structural constraints continue to limit the large-scale deployment of digital learning across Nigeria. A study titled Learning Technologies Use in Nigerian Schools in the 21st Century: Challenges and Prospects found that many public schools lack basic ICT infrastructure, including computers, stable internet connectivity and reliable electricity supply.
Funding also remains a constraint. UNESCO data shows Nigeria’s education spending remains below the recommended benchmark, limiting investment in infrastructure, maintenance systems and teacher training.
In her thesis Digital Learning in Higher Education in Nigeria: Issues, Challenges and Prospects, Nigerian academic Josephine Eleojo Haruna identified limited digital literacy among teachers and students as a major barrier to the effective use of digital tools. The research also highlighted high internet costs, poor bandwidth, inconsistent connectivity and weak technical support systems as obstacles to the adoption of online learning platforms.
At the same time, ICT integration enables remote and hybrid learning models, allowing students to access educational content beyond physical classrooms, while also supporting personalized and self-paced learning through interactive tools. The use of technologies such as artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and learning analytics is associated by the Federal Government with improved teaching efficiency and more data-driven education planning, while digital platforms reduce geographical barriers for students in underserved areas.
Recent initiatives illustrate ongoing efforts to scale digital learning infrastructure. In March 2026, 20 interactive digital boards were deployed to Unity Schools through a partnership involving the Unity Schools Old Students Association and indigenous technology firm Wowbii Infrastructure, as part of efforts to modernize classrooms and improve student engagement. The intervention aligns with broader federal efforts to integrate technology into public education and strengthen institutional capacity across schools.
