Eight African countries, including South Africa, Egypt and Nigeria, are among the world’s 25 most AI outsourcing-ready destinations, according to the Global Outsourcing AI Readiness Index released in June by Ataraxis, a U.S.-based company specializing in global outsourcing and talent recruitment.
The index assesses the AI outsourcing readiness of the 25 leading global outsourcing destinations featured in the 2026 edition of Ataraxis’ Global Outsourcing Talent Index, released in April. That ranking covered 193 countries and territories.
As a growing number of global companies outsource the development, integration and management of their AI tools to specialized service providers, the AI outsourcing readiness index draws on 15 indicators from publicly available reports and internationally recognized sources covering AI adoption, skills development and enterprise digital transformation. These sources include Microsoft, OpenAI, LinkedIn, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), Coursera and GitHub.
The indicators are grouped into four sub-indices: AI adoption by the population, which measures current adoption levels, adoption trends and connectivity; AI proficiency among employees, which assesses AI talent concentration, the developer ecosystem and demographic readiness; AI adoption by businesses, which measures deployment rates, OpenAI penetration, pilot-to-production conversion, barriers to adoption and industry depth; and AI learning pathways, which cover Coursera rankings and AI maturity, enrollment in generative AI courses, performance in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), and national AI education policies.
South Africa Leads the Continent
Each sub-index is scored on a scale of 0 to 100, with higher scores indicating stronger performance in that category. The overall score is calculated as a weighted average of the four sub-indices, also on a scale of 0 to 100, using the following weights: AI adoption by the population (30%), AI proficiency among employees (30%), AI adoption by businesses (25%) and AI learning pathways (15%).
South Africa ranks eighth among the 25 countries covered by the Global Outsourcing AI Readiness Index, with an overall score of 66.5. The country performs best in AI adoption by the population, with a score of 78, and AI adoption by businesses, with a score of 65. AI learning pathways remain its weakest area, with a score of 53, underscoring the need for continued investment in AI education and skills development to maintain its position as Africa’s leading destination for AI outsourcing.
Egypt ranks second in Africa and 16th globally with a score of 49.35, ahead of Nigeria at 49.15. Kenya follows with 47.6, ahead of Morocco (43.35), Ghana (42.25), Uganda (25.1) and Ethiopia (24.2).
Globally, India ranks first with a score of 84.55, followed by Brazil (76.1), Malaysia (75.65), Hungary (69.1) and the Philippines (69.05).
Ataraxis also analyzed the seven largest markets driving global demand for business process outsourcing (BPO) services. The United States accounts for 36% of global spending, estimated at $138.8 billion, ahead of Japan (5.9%), the United Kingdom (5.2%), Germany (3.7%), Canada (2.7%), France (2.2%) and Australia (2.2%).
Measured by AI maturity, the United States ranks first among those markets, followed by the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Australia, Canada and Japan.
