Kenya: Telkom completes the first phase of the extension of its 4G/LTE mobile network

In November 2021, Telkom signed an agreement with Ericsson and NEC XON for the extension of its 4G network in Kenya. The company, which wants to become an integrated telecom operator, has made its broadband network coverage one of its priorities to counter the hegemony of market leader Safaricom.
Telecom operator Telkom Kenya has announced that it has completed the first phase of its nationwide 4G/LTE network expansion project, in partnership with Swedish technology company Ericsson and ICT systems integrator NEC XON. This first phase targeted the Côte and Bas-Est regions where 224 new sites were installed. The company has set a goal of adding 2,000 4G sites by 2023.
According to Telkom Kenya, the extension of its 4G/LTE network is a key element of its national deployment program, the achievement of which is estimated at 100 million USD. It is also a main focus of the new strategic direction adopted by Telkom Kenya in August 2020 to become a successful integrated telecommunications provider and future technology company.
“ We remain committed to better positioning our base of infrastructure assets and services to drive digital transformation within our various customer segments, bringing them more value, and bridging the digital divide through the extension of our mobile data network, ” says Mugo Kibati, CEO of Telkom Kenya.
Ultimately, this program should enable Telkom Kenya to upgrade 80% of its network to 4G and improve its footprint. This will enable it to attract new consumers and record additional revenue in a Kenyan market dominated by Safaricom, which controls 64.2% of mobile phone subscriptions against 26.8% for Airtel and 6% for Telkom.
