Nigeria and Gambia want to collaborate in the digital field

Nigeria is Africa’s largest telecommunications market with more than 220 million mobile phone subscribers. Other countries on the continent want to learn from Nigeria’s success in a context marked by the acceleration of digital transformation across the continent.
Nigeria and Gambia want to strengthen their cooperation in the field of digital economy. To this end, Isa Ali Pantami, Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, and his Gambian counterpart, Ousman Bah, signed a memorandum of understanding on Tuesday, May 23
Collaboration will include broadband development, spectrum management, research, capacity building, cybersecurity, internet governance, infrastructure, legal frameworks and e-government.
The signing of this MoU comes about seven months after the Gambian government sought the support and collaboration of the Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC) to accelerate the development of the telecommunications sector. Mr. Bah then said that Nigeria had achieved the objectives of digitizing its economy in view of the statistics of the sector.
According to the latest NCC statistics, Nigeria has 226.1 million mobile phone subscriptions and 157.5 million internet users, of which 92 million use broadband. Additionally, Information and Communication Technology (ICT) sector activities contributed 16.22% to Nigeria’s real GDP in the fourth quarter of 2022, according to figures from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS). .
This partnership should make it possible to accelerate the development of ICT in the two countries, particularly in The Gambia. According to the latest data from the Public Utilities Regulatory Authority (PURA), the country had 2.6 million mobile phone subscribers, of which 1.1 million used broadband.
