Telecel Group wants to change the name of Vodafone Ghana about a year after buying the telecoms operator

Ghanaian telecommunications company Vodafone Ghana is expected to soon abandon this brand name and become Telecel, reflecting the identity of its new owner, Telecel Group. This is what a publication from the mobile operator on X suggests on Tuesday January 23. The change should also apply to the company logo.

This announcement comes about a year after Telecel Group bought the 70% majority stake held by the British company Vodafone Group in Vodafone Ghana (Ghana Telecommunications Company Limited). An agreement reached between the two parties authorizes the new owner to exploit the brand identity of the former owner for a year or a year and a half, while it develops its own brand identity.

The announced name change should allow Telecel Group to reposition the operator in the Ghanaian telecoms market and change the way consumers perceive it. The company had an 18.17% share of the mobile phone market as of January 2023, according to statistics from the National Communications Authority (NCA). Its rivals MTN and AT had market shares of 14.51% and 67.32% respectively.

As a reminder, Telecel is committed to making investments in extending 4G network coverage and launching innovative fintech solutions. In April 2023, the company signed a commercial agreement with direct dial satellite service provider Lynk Global Inc to expand the geographic coverage of the mobile operator’s network in Ghana. It also launched a telecoms network expansion campaign aimed at deploying 300 new 4G telecoms sites across the country.
