Madagascar: Airtel strengthens its telecoms service offering by launching satellite communications

The telecoms company Airtel Madagascar launched a new satellite connectivity solution on Monday March 11. Called “Airtel Satellite”, the initiative should allow the local subsidiary of Airtel Africa to improve the coverage of its services in Madagascar and to be more competitive in the face of competition led by Orange and Telma.
“ With maximum service availability and a guarantee of uninterrupted connectivity, Airtel Madagascar is part of the future and brings to the market a very high speed, low latency and highly resilient connectivity service ,” said Anne Catherine Tchokonté, general manager of Airtel Madagascar.
This initiative is part of a larger program initiated in November 2022 by Airtel Africa with the signing of a partnership agreement with the satellite telecoms service operator OneWeb (now Eutelsat OneWeb). The two partners had committed to carrying out tests in South Africa in September 2023 before proceeding with the commercial deployment of the solution in the group’s 14 markets in Africa.
The use of satellites responds to the need for Airtel Africa to cover not only urban areas, but also rural areas where the demand for high-speed connectivity is beginning to grow. Mobile services are now a catalyst for development in several areas such as agriculture.
