Vodacom hits 254Mbps speeds with SuperUpload tech

In what it calls a milestone for the African continent, Vodacom South Africa has revealed that its new SuperUpload technology has hit a blazing 254Mbps uplink speed.
“This breakthrough reinforces Vodacom’s ongoing 5G network leadership in the country, particularly on speed and performance,” the company said in an announcement.
Vodacom said similar speeds are usually reserved for high-end fibre-to-the-home connections. Its SuperUpload technology enables customers to achieve the same upload speeds on their mobile phones.
SuperUpload speeds now enable “seamless cloud backups, rapid large file transfers, and high-quality video conferencing, all without being tethered to a desk.”
Vodacom’s technology will eventually allow customers to upload data from two different channels on a 5G network.
“As network conditions change, the device shifts to the channel with less traffic or a stronger signal,” it said.
“This results in quicker uploads, smoother video calls, and more consistent upload performance when sharing large files or working in the cloud.”
SuperUpload should be of particular interest to gamers, where cloud gaming requires stable download and upload speeds.
Customers who rely on video conferencing technology would also benefit from SuperUpload becoming available on their smartphones via 5G network.
“This is not just faster uploads; it represents a fundamental shift in what mobile connectivity makes possible,” said Beverly Ngwenya, technology director at Vodacom South Africa.
“The successful testing of SuperUpload means we can continue providing a superior 5G network experience, as the investment in our network continues to pay off.”
Vodacom invests significantly in novel 5G innovations
The company says that alongside the fibre-class upload speeds over 5G, the technology also brings enhanced upload stability. It also reduces latency and increases performance reliability.
“SuperUpload enables our network to support the most demanding modern applications with the low latency, consistent performance these applications require,” said Ngwenya.
The successful testing of SuperUpload is the latest in a series of network and connectivity innovations from the group.
According to MyBroadband Insights’ Mobile Network Quality Report for 2025, Vodacom has built the best 5G network in South Africa.
In June 2025, the telecom’s 5G network recorded an average download speed of over 260Mbps, the top speeds out of all the country’s connectivity groups.
The company also claimed the completion of South Africa’s first native voice call on 5G in August 2025 using technology called Voice over New Radio (VoNR).
Following the first VoNR call, Vodacom said it would build on the system with faster call setup times, better voice quality with high-definition audio and reduced background noise.
“5G technology will also make it possible to introduce several new tech-driven capabilities and user experiences, adding even greater value for users,” the company shared.
